Ditching Dentures: How to Transition to Dental Implants

Dentures are a great way to bridge the gap with tooth loss, but over time they can be a hassle. With the extra maintenance and accessories needed to take care of them, they can also be a wallet drain. If you’re ready to make a change, dental implants could be the best step forward! But how can you transition from one to the other? Continue reading to see the process so you can smoothly make the switch.

Step 1: Dentist Consultation

Dental implants need a lot of preparation, so the first step is to see your dentist. At your consultation, they’ll give your mouth a full evaluation from teeth and gums to your jawbone density. Dental implants aren’t suitable for everyone, but with a thorough exam and proper planning, you and your dentist can put you on the right track.

Step 2: Treatment Planning

After your evaluation, your treatment plan is created. If your dentist found any issues in your mouth like gum disease or bone loss, these will be treated first. The purpose of a treatment plan is to lay out a roadmap to your smile goals. There may be a few stops on the way to your implants, but the result will be well worth it!

Step 3: Placement, Recovery, and Fitting

Once you’re fully prepared, your dentist will place your implants. During the procedure, your dentist will strategically place your implants so that your new prosthetics will be securely anchored. Each post is implanted into your jawbone and needs a few months to heal before the process can go forward.

Step 4: Recovery and Fitting

During your recovery, your permanent denture will be fabricated at a dental lab. While you wait, you’ll be fitted with a temporary one so you’re not without teeth! After three to six months, you’ll receive your new prosthetic which will be anchored in place over your implants or attached to brackets—depending on the type of implants you chose.

And that’s it! With these easy steps you can say goodbye to the limitations of dentures and hello to the comfort and confidence of dental implants. The guidance and support from your dental team will make transitioning to dental implants a life-changing experience!
