7 Tips for Sleeping Through a Nighttime Toothache

Few things are more frustrating than trying to fall asleep while dealing with a nagging toothache. Tooth pain often intensifies at night, making it hard to relax and get the rest your body needs. While it’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible, there are several things you can do at home to help manage the discomfort and make it through the night.

1. Elevate Your Head

Lying flat can cause blood to rush to your head and increase pressure around your tooth, making the pain feel worse. Try propping yourself up with an extra pillow or sleeping in a slightly upright position. Elevating your head can help reduce swelling and pressure, making the pain more manageable as you try to sleep.

2. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relief

Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be effective in reducing tooth pain and inflammation. Always follow the dosage instructions and avoid combining medications unless directed by a healthcare professional. Pain relievers can offer temporary relief to help you fall asleep and stay asleep until you can see a dentist.

3. Apply a Cold Compress

A cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek near the painful area can help numb the pain and reduce swelling. Wrap ice in a towel or use a cold pack and apply it in 15-minute intervals, allowing breaks in between. This simple remedy can be especially helpful if your toothache is caused by trauma or inflammation.

4. Rinse with Warm Saltwater

Salt water is a natural disinfectant and can help reduce inflammation and soothe irritated gums. Mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gently swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Doing this before bed can help flush out debris and bacteria that might be contributing to the pain.

5. Avoid Certain Foods and Drinks

Before bedtime, steer clear of sugary, acidic, or very hot or cold foods and beverages, as they can aggravate tooth sensitivity and pain. Instead, stick to soft, mild foods and rinse your mouth afterward. It’s also important to avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent worsening the issue.

6. Use Clove Oil for Natural Relief

Clove oil contains eugenol, a natural numbing agent with antibacterial properties. Dab a small amount of clove oil onto a cotton ball and gently apply it to the painful area. Be careful not to swallow the oil and use it sparingly. Many people find this a helpful temporary fix for nighttime tooth pain.

7. Keep Your Mouth Clean

Even when it hurts, it’s important to brush and floss before bed. Food particles stuck near a decaying tooth or gum infection can increase pain and risk of infection. Gently clean around the sore area to avoid further irritation while keeping the area as clean as possible.
